Enneagram-shaped maps describe nine classical role or motivation types, with a large popular literature. Many people recognise themselves in the stories even when they have never taken a formal test.
Their strength is recognisable roles and self-story. They are not as settled in mainstream trait science as the Big Five.
Background
Research finds structure that partly overlaps with personality traits — a useful validity check — but the questions and the claim differ from “rate yourself on Extraversion.” The tradition is carried more in coaching and popular writing than in a single peer-reviewed standard.
